SUMMARY:4th Summer Tour: Tour of May Natural History Museum
DESCRIPTION:You’ve all seen the world’s largest beetle\, Herkimer\, from the roadway of SH-115.  Just last year\, the refurbished statue won an HPA award for excellence in preserving shared heritage. He will welcome you in as you proceed up the the road to the museum\, which has been in place since the late 1950’s when it was built by John May.  The museum building holds the world’s largest insect collection\, as James May went all over the world finding specimens. (Note:  The owners also own a nice Golden Eagle campground on the hillside above the museum.)  This museum is an icon to those who have lived in and visited the Springs over the years\, and grew up wondering what was up the hill (from the giant beetle) in that museum. \nPlease bring $10 cash exact change (or credit card) per person to the museum (group rate) to register at 5:30-6 PM.  At 6:00 PM we will split into 3 groups\, and rotate every half hour: \n\nOne group will go into the theater\, which will show a film featured on Fox business news about the family running the museum. (Two other films are also available if those might be preferred.)\nSecond group will tour the museum showroom\, there is a gift shop also.\nThird group will go outside in front of the museum and enjoy some time at the picnic tables\, have snacks and water or walk outdoors looking for insects and other fauna in the waterway\, grasses\, etc.  (Wear good walking shoes.)\n\nDirections:  The museum and grounds are located on the west side of SH-115\, past the south side of town. Take I-25 to Nevada\, get off on Hwy. 115 (much construction is going on on that roadway)\, drive about 11 miles.  You will see a very tall white water tower to your left\, and Herkimer on your right.  Turn west there onto Rock Creek Canyon Road.  Take a photo of the beetle and then proceed up the dirt road. \nParking:  This is going to be a concern.  Try to carpool as much as possible.  Please save the 10-15 or so parking spaces directly adjacent to the museum for those with walking problems. Someone will direct others up the hill from SH-115\, where some can park their vehicles along the roadway\, near the concrete plant/construction and form informal carpools to bring some vehicles all the way up that road to the museum. \nOur host for the evening will be Diana Fruh\, who is the museum director.

SUMMARY:3rd Summer Tour: Pikes Peak Trolley Museum & Restoration Shop
DESCRIPTION:The Pikes Peak Historical Street Railway Foundation was founded in 1982 to acquire\, restore and operate an authentic Colorado Springs streetcar.  This mission has been fulfilled except for operating our cars on the city’s streets.  You will see the first trolley we acquired and are now restoring.  It was purchased by Winfield Scott Stratton in 1901 and became the “Drunkard’s Special\,” since it ran from dry Colorado Springs to Manitou via wet Old Colorado City.  We have since acquired many other cars\, some of which came from Philadelphia.  You will take a ride on one of these cars.  You will see four model railroads in operation\, including our prize\, the Polar Express\, also a baggage car under restoration by the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad\, colleagues in our efforts to bring our past into the present.  We’ll visit a caboose and a separate museum dedicated to the Chicago\, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad which terminated at the 1888 Rock Island roundhouse that anchors our museum.  You’ll enjoy our many photographs and other memorabilia that tell the history of streetcar operation in Colorado Springs from 1887 to 1932.  You will witness living history on rails for an enjoyable evening. \n(Just south of Fillmore and C&C Sand & Gravel Co.)\, Colorado Springs \nWater on the premises is non-potable – DO NOT DRINK!  Water for drinking will be provided. \nCheck-in time: 6:00 P.M. Tours to start at 6:30 P.M. \nNo charge\, but donations welcomed \nDisabled access:  Yes \nBathrooms:Yes \nHPA Coordinator:  John Haney \nTour Guides: Members of Trolley Museum Staff

SUMMARY:1st Summer Tour: Home of Carol Gugat
DESCRIPTION:THIS REGISTRATION IS FOR THE 5:30pm TOUR \nRegistration notes:  This isn’t a large home so there will be two registrations holding 40 people each MAXIMUM.  Note the earlier times.  You will need to select which group you prefer when signing up. \nYou are signing up for 2nd registration on this form. \n4 PM:  1st registration \n4:30 PM:  Tours begin\, will switch groups at 5 PM \nThese tours end at 5:30 PM promptly. \n5:30 PM:  2nd registration \n6:00 PM:  Tours begin\, will switch groups at 6:30 PM \nSecond tours end at 7 PM. \nThe home is located just two houses south of the First Lutheran Church where HPA usually meets.  It is between Columbia and Buena Ventura Streets\, on the east side of Cascade.  Please NOTE that the sidewalks in front of the gated yard are chopped up\, so take care when walking up to the house!  Parking is available on Cascade.  No food is allowed in the house\, but bottled water will be available. \n  \nThis home was built ca 1897 by George Babbit.  The home is not a “gingerbread” Queen Ann Victorian\, but falls more into the style of Charles Eastlake\, an architect who was known for a plainer style with moderate decoration—gabled roof and decorative shingles.  There is a sleeping porch off the master bedroom\, and many interesting and unique decorative touches throughout the home\, even a bathroom totally wallpapered in old maps and Carol’s room full of old dolls of every kind. This house was converted during WWII into six apartments.  In 1993 the former owners restored the home into a single family residence.  During that conversion\, a coved ceiling was discovered in the kitchen\, and pocket doors were restored.  The front porch was also added at that time.  Current homeowners have lived here since 2006. \n  \nNote that there are two bathrooms on the main floor that are handicap accessible.  However\, the house itself has steep narrow stairs and would only be accessible to those with canes who could maneuver staircases and stand.

SUMMARY:Tour #6: US Air Force Academy Planetarium
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS FULL AND WILL NOT BE TAKING ANYMORE REGISTRATIONS. \nThe US Air Force Academy Planetarium was built in 1959\, making it one of the oldest buildings on the campus.  After decades of continuous use\, GPS and other computing technology rendered the building obsolete and it was closed in 2004.  The facility was reopened in 2019 after a major renovation brought it into the 21st century\, outfitted with over a dozen computers and six projectors.  Join us in seeing how this planetarium has united the building’s rich history with current day technology and scientific understanding to make even the furthest galaxies accessible to anyone.  The live tour will include a short introduction to the history of the planetarium\, a tour of the night sky\, and an astronomer-guided tour through the solar system and beyond. \n___________________________ \nDirections: CAUTION –  Do NOT use GPS directions as they will give you incorrect directions. \nPlease follow these directions:  Use exit 156 off Interstate 25\, entering the US Air Force Academy through the North Gate.  You will need your driver’s license or military ID and proof of vehicle insurance to enter the base.  Once on base\, continue driving straight on Academy Drive for 4 miles and then turn left to park in the visitor lot for Arnold Hall.  To the north of the visitor parking\, there is a building with a white dome—that’s the Planetarium!  Follow the steps to the front door or use the winding path to the left of the steps for ramp access. \n___________________________ \nHPA Coordinator:  Ann Brock \nLead Tour Guide:  Remy Morgan \nRestrooms: yes \nDisabled Access: yes \nRESERVE HERE – IMPORTANT: ONE NAME ONLY PER RESERVATION ENTRY.  TO ADD ANOTHER PERSON (e.g. a spouse or friend)\, CLICK +ADD GUEST AND AN ADDITIONAL RESERVATION BOX WILL APPEAR.
