    Schulz Residence

    July 13th at 6:30 pm

    ADDRESS: 1325 N Cascade Ave.

    PARKING: Park along Cascade Ave.

TOUR GUIDES:  Mark Tremmel, owner of Tremmel Design Group.  He holds architecture licenses in several western states and national registration in the American Institute of Architects and the US Green Building Council LEED AP.  With over 30 years in the profession, Mark has won awards in Architecture, Environmental Design (his dual degrees) and Planning.

    TOUR COORDINATOR: Cathy Mundy

THE TOUR:  Joan and Dutch Schulz bought this wonderful home in 1985.  Joan arrived on Army orders and Dutch was a land developer.  The house is a modified shingle style mansion designed and built in 1902 by Walter F. Douglas and Duncan Hetherington.  The current owner, Mr. Schulz, speaks of it this way:

“Welcome to our home and to the many stories of the people who lived here.  Learn how a seemingly modest bungalow morphed into a 7,000 sf mansion as rich in history as it is in appointments.  What was the social function of the breathtaking two-story foyer with a winding staircase and viewing balcony?  Why did a rich spinster move to Colorado Springs and build this house only to sell it a year later?  Why did a union organizer for CF&I Steel, who chose to live here rather than Pueblo, save this house only to have it lost to his family’s legacy?  Who was the man who bought this house of his dreams yet “never slept a night in it” and sold it 2 ½ years later?  A final mystery: why did my wife, who refused to even get out of the car to see the house, agree to buy it almost immediately 18 months later?”

The present-day garden has but one story- a woman (Joan) who read the Secret Garden while growing up in England, and vowed someday to have a garden of her own.  You will see this garden complete with ponds and fountains, birdbaths and streams and a secluded pergola with a fireplace. See (3) seven-foot tall gates with wrought iron vegetation decoration.  And, oh yes of course, there is an antique potting shed covered with vines.

    HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBLE: No

    RESTROOM FACILITIES: Yes

COST: Free to HPA Members; Non-Members $10
