    2017 Summer Tour #7

    Union Printer’s Home

    August 17th at 6:30 pm

ADDRESS: 101 South Union Blvd; drive through arched gate and park anywhere along the circular drive except where painted yellow.  The tour begins at the north stairway.

PARKING: Park anywhere along the circular drive except where painted yellow.

TOUR GUIDES: Faith Nation- Hopper, Admissions & Public Relations Director, will provide inside tour. Tim Scanlon, former city Historic Preservation Officer and now local historian, will lead the outside tour.

    TOUR COORDINATOR: John Norton

THE TOUR: The Union Printers Home, built in 1892 for the International Typographical Union (ITU) has served as the architectural icon of the east side of downtown.  At a total cost of $71,144.14 the Victorian “Castle on the Hill” is constructed of red sandstone and white lava stone; the interior is elegant with marble and wood elements.

The arched entryway boasts the words “Its Bounty Unpurchasable”, a reference to its goal to “relax, restore and heal”.  Originally set on 175 acres, this hospital and sanitorium provided for over 25,000 ITU-member patients over the years. They sat on large sun-drenched porches, with access to a barber shop, pool hall, library and tree-shaded pathways. Tuberculosis patients lived in 20 tents.

The tour will begin inside in the theater where the film “Mr Printer” will be featured. This was produced in 1957 to depict life at the Home for a typical union member in need of medical care.

Handicap Access:  Wheelchair access is on the east side at ground level; ramps and elevators available.
Restrooms:  Yes, 1st floor, at end of north and south lobbies

COST: Free to HPA Members; Non-Members $10
